Director of Research Centre – create and manage a new Centre of Excellence having full research autonomy

Job Description

National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) in Poland invites applications for the Director of the NOMATEN Centre of Excellence formed through a partnership between NCBJ, CEA (France) and VTT (Finland). NOMATEN will focus on the studies and development of novel materials, specifically those designed to work under harsh conditions – radiation, high temperatures and corrosive environments.

The newly formed Centre of Excellence should consist of 5 to 7 Research Groups, which would be led by competitively recruited, world-class researchers. Working within a common environment and large-scale goals, the Research Group leaders would be able to preserve research autonomy and to foster innovative approaches. The overall concept of NOMATEN may thus be summarized as a set of Research Groups which are complementary in the sense of an overall challenge but independent in the choice of the research approaches and the needed expertise, methodology, tools and access to research infrastructures. NOMATEN structure is envisioned in a way that supports a continuous development of understanding, based on theoretical models and experimental studies, spanning the scales from nanometres to centimetres and more. Special attention will be given to extensive validation of simulation data at each level of modelling: by structural measurements at atomic scale and functional properties for constitutive models and finite elements analysis.

The NOMATEN Centre of Excellence has received an initial operational grant from the Foundation for Polish Science, supporting its operations for a 5-year period, and is one of fifty projects selected by the European Commission for the second phase competition of the prestigious Teaming for Excellence programme. NCBJ, CEA and VTT are committed to operate the Centre for at least a ten-year horizon.

Whom we look for (Requirements and profile of the candidate sought):

  • A researcher with world-recognised authority in the field of materials research, with outstanding scientific achievements and proven experience in the administration and management of large projects. The candidate profile should be similar to that of ERC advanced grant holder.
  • The Director will lead an internationally recognised team composed of about fifty researchers coming from various countries, so the candidate should have experience in the management of a research organisation of comparable scale, including the capacity to select long-term objectives for the NOMATEN CoE, verify their execution and be responsible for achievement of the main organisational goals.
  • Because the NOMATEN Centre of Excellence is formed through international partnership, experience in working in multinational environments is desired.
  • The candidate for the position of NOMATEN Director would, at the same time, act as a Research Group leader, setting up its research agenda, conducting high-impact research, publishing papers in highly-cited journals and ensuring the funding needed for the CoE activities. As a Research Group Leader, the candidate is also expected to supervise PhD theses and post-docs.
  • The ideal candidate should have a track record of achievements in multinational scientific projects.

What we offer (Proposed employment conditions):

  • A chance to make ones’ own mark by participation in the creation of a new international Center of Excellence, devoted to study materials in harsh conditions.
  • Full research autonomy within the general Research Agenda devoted to material studies focused on the behaviours and design of materials for harsh environments; supervised by an International Scientific Committee, headed by Sergio Bertolucci (the former Director of Research and Scientific Computing at CERN), and composed of the leading authorities in materials research.
  • Access to the research potential of NOMATEN’s three partners. National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) is one of the best Polish Research Institutes (the only non-medical Research Institute to receive the prestigious A+ category in recent countrywide evaluation). The two international partners, French Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA) and Finnish Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd (VTT) and world leaders in research and commercialization.
  • Access to unique research infrastructure, including research nuclear reactor Maria, a supercomputing centre, dedicated material laboratories including hot cells and advanced equipment at NCBJ, plus access to the infrastructure of the project partners, CEA and VTT.
  • A chance to create and develop organisational culture, based on cooperation with CEA and VTT and on a large number of open positions in the NOMATEN CoE (Research Group leaders, senior and junior researchers, PhD students…)
  • Attractive remuneration on a European level; a permanent employment contract, including full Polish Social Security and Health Care coverage.
  • Support of an experienced local team devoted to legal, financial and organisational tasks as well as logistic support and advice related to work in Poland in the initial period of employment.

Instructions to applicants:

Application package should include CV, Motivation Letter and a filled questionnaire “Candidates Information Sheet”. The package should be sent to NOMATENSearchCommittee@ncbj. gov. pl by 15.09.2018. Candidates may be asked to provide additional documents and their vision for leading the Centre and its Research Agenda. Top three candidates will be short-listed and invited to interview.
