Offer for industry

The research performed at NOMATEN CoE covers both experimental and modeling aspects of materials science and engineering. We deal with materials synthesis (spark plasma sintering, arc melting), characterization (electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction) and testing (mechanical, thermal, corrosion properties). We perform simulations at scale ranging from atomistic to component levels. On top of everything, we apply state-of-the-art artificial intelligence methods, e. g. for defect detection, process optimization and even natural language processing in specific materials science contexts.

The CoE NOMATEN Materials Research Laboratory offers research and engineering problems solving using advanced and unique research infrastructure in following areas:

  • NDT testing of materials and welded joints with accredited procedures (Ultrasound Testing, Visual Testing, Penetration Tests, Magnetic Particle Method, Eddy Current Testing, Magnetic Permeability Testing )
  • Macro- and microstructure characterization and metallographic analyses with LM, SEM and TEM techniques (EDS, EBSD, FIB, In-situ characterization, TEM High temperature analyses up to 1000 C)
  • X-ray diffraction phase analysis (GI-XRD, High temperature XRD up to 1200 C)
  • Standard mechanical testing of materials with accredited procedures andASTM, ISO, BS standards
  • Miniaturized samples mechanical testing (Static and Dynamic testing > Room temperature and up to 1000 C, Tensile tests, Small Punch Test SPT,Crack Tip Opening Displacement CTOD
  • Hardness testing (Rockwell, Brinell, Vickers) according with ASTM, ISO, Load range 0.3-250 kg,
  • Nanohardness testing (Room temperature and up to 850 C)
  • Materials thermal properties testing (TG, DSC, Thermal expansion, conductivity and diffusivity etc.)
  • Chemical composition and Elemental analyses (OES, XRF, LA-ICP-MS, LIBS)
  • Synthesis of protective layers and coatings (PVD, Sol-Gel, Electrochemical techniques)
  • Polarization (LSV, CV) tests according to the ASTM regulations (corrosion rate [mm/year], tendency to pitting corrosion)
  • Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) tests (testing coatings/paint systems, /oxide layers, corrosion monitoring)
  • Corrosion tests in microscale (Scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) equipped with the Shear-Force and High-Res modules
  • Surface modification of materials with Ion implantation techniques
  • Analysis of thin layers and coatings with Raman spectroscopy (Raman Imaging, High-temperature measurements up to 1000 C)
  • Corrosion protection and materials degradation analyses
  • Materials failure and Quality assurance analyses
  • Artificial Intelligence solutions for Materials quality control and Approval procedures
