Novel approaches for nondestructive testing of engineering materials

Prof. Łukasz Pieczonka
AGH University of Kraków

Abstract:

The presentation discusses new developments in damage characterization of engineering materials with ultrasonic waves. Special focus will be given to the inspection of thin-walled structures with guided ultrasonic waves (GUW) and laser ultrasound (LUS).

We begin by recalling the basic theory of Lamb waves propagating in plates and discussing their interaction with damage. Subsequently, we discuss signal processing techniques used for damage evaluation, including techniques based on local energy maps, wave scattering, mode conversions, local wavenumber estimation (LWE), and anisotropic local wavenumber estimation (ALWE). The concept of Time Reversal Elastic Nonlinearity Diagnostics (TREND) will also be introduced and demonstrated on experimental examples. We conclude by outlining prospects for applying ultrasonic waves for damage characterization in research and engineering applications.

Bio:

Łukasz Pieczonka is an Associate Professor and the Head of Department of Robotics and Mechatronics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics at AGH University of Krakow, Poland.

His research interests are focused on three major areas, including (1) structural dynamics and elastic waves propagation, (2) non-classical damage detection techniques, including nonlinear acoustics, and (3) thermal and hyperspectral imaging, including vibro- and laser thermography. These research areas are mutually complementary and aim to increase our understanding of the mechanisms that can be utilized for nondestructive characterization of engineering materials. He actively collaborates with many international partners in Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East.

Professor Pieczonka is an active member of several professional societies, serving as a Head of the Committee on International Research and Education (CIRE) of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), member of the board of the Polish Society of Technical Diagnostics (PTDT) and the Krakow chapter of the Polish Acoustical Society (PTA). He is a member of the Specialist International Group "Nonlinear-UT" of the International Committee for Non-Destructive Testing (ICNDT), Polish Society of Nondestructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics (PTBNiDT SIMP), Academian NDT International, and IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement (I&M) Society TC-1 - Nondestructive Evaluation and Industrial Inspection (NDE&II). He promoted two PhD students (one in Poland and one in Italy) and currently supervises four PhD students (two in regular doctoral programs, one implementation doctorate, and one in collaboration with an international partner).
