Defect studies with positron annihilation spectroscopy

dr hab. Paweł Horodek
Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków, Poland

Abstract:

Modern materials characterization increasingly emphasizes the importance of studying structural defects alongside conventional analyses of phase composition, morphology, and crystallographic structure. Since defects strongly affect the physical, mechanical, and functional properties of materials, their investigation is essential for a complete understanding of material behavior. In this context, positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) constitutes a highly sensitive method for the detection of structural defects, such as vacancies, their cluster, voids, etc. PAS can provide unique information inaccessible to conventional characterization methods such as neutron techniques, X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron microscopy, or spectroscopic analyses. In the frame of the presentation, the basics of PAS, experimental procedure, data analysis and interpretation as well as examples of application in various fields will be discussed.

Bio:

Paweł Horodek, DSc is an associate professor at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN) in Kraków. His research focuses on solid-state physics, positron annihilation spectroscopy, ion implantation and radiation-induced defects in materials. He spent seven years conducting research at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, where he developed positron annihilation spectroscopy and slow monochromatic positron beam techniques for the investigation of structural defects in materials. His current research interests include radiation damage, defect characterization and the application of positron-based methods in materials science and engineering.
