Abstract:
Achieving self-reliance in defence and strategic technologies is important for any nation, but there are major bottlenecks in materials & design, reverse engineering, stringent design and materials constraints. We have established unique facilities under the graphene centre to translate the reinforced metal/alloys composites into components. We are adding new dimensions by tuning material properties to the required or desired range using additives such as graphene/2D materials/ODS. These facilities are cutting-edge, industrial-scale metal additive manufacturing technologies. Using them, we will be developing technologies and working with end users in defence, strategic industry, R&D of new materials development and materials qualification for additive manufacturing, to accelerate the translation of graphene/2D materials research into products. The Proof of Concept (PoC) has been established for the first time in India and internationally, and to the best of our knowledge, we are the first to publish on graphene-reinforced metal composites through additive manufacturing in reputed journals like Materials Science & Engineering A, 774, 138936, 2020 (I.F~ 5.2) on SS316L + Graphene composites, and in Additive Manufacturing, 33, 101095, 2020 (I.F~ 10.99) on AlSi10Mg + Graphene composites. We have demonstrated four times higher yield strength of SS316L (up to ~ 800 MPa) with ~ 40% reduction in wear rate. In this talk, we will present the recent results on high temperature applications of the developed graphene reinforced metal alloys.
