CONNECT NM – Prof. Jacek Jagielski

CONNECT-NM (Coordination of the European Research Community on Nuclear Materials for Energy Innovation) is a five-year co-funded European Partnership coordinated by CIEMAT and implemented from October 2024 to September 2029. It brings together research organisations, universities, industry and nuclear stakeholders from 18 European countries. The initial programme budget amounts to approximately EUR 36 million, including EUR 20 million of Euratom funding and national co-financing. The Partnership aims to coordinate European research and innovation in nuclear materials and accelerate the development and qualification of materials for current and future reactor technologies. Its strategic objective is to shift the research approach from “observe and qualify” towards “design and control” by combining advanced experiments, materials modelling, digital technologies, materials informatics, accelerated testing and monitoring methods. Activities cover materials acceleration platforms, experimental test beds, qualification procedures, non-destructive examination and structural health monitoring. NCBJ NOMATEN participates actively in CONNECT-NM and contributes its expertise in materials characterisation, irradiation effects, modelling and nuclear research infrastructure. In the first project call, NCBJ scientists joined four of the 17 selected projects and coordinate two of them. These activities address the correlation between ion and neutron irradiation, ageing and cracking of reactor steels, additively manufactured high-entropy alloys for advanced reactors, and the development of ontologies and digital tools for nuclear materials research.
